YouTube offers creators new ways to earn money. Neal Mohan, the chief products officer of YouTube said that a huge chunk of revenue of Google owned service is generated by way of advertising. It is also a fact that YouTube often criticized for under compensating creators, will help and allow them to set up paid channel memberships, the company said. "But we also want to think beyond ads. Creators should have as many ways and opportunities to make money as possible," he said.
Viewers will pay $4.99 a month for channel memberships giving them access to exclusive content including live-streams, extra videos or shout-outs on channels with more than 100,000 subscribers.
YouTube Creators will be able to sell 20 merchandise items from logo shirts to phone cases directly on their channels, Neal Mohan also talked about another new feature called Premieres, which allows creators to debut pre-recorded videos as a live moment. It automatically will create a public landing page to build anticipation and hype up new content.
Moreover, YouTube often accused of giving creators only a meagre slice of revenue returns a good part of its advertising revenue. The site is facing increasing competition from other platforms using more and more video.The news comes on the heels of similar announcements this week from Facebook and Instagram, all aimed at rewarding creators.
YouTube also has expanded into ticketing and merchandise.
According to YouTube it has more than 1.9 billion users but the figure only counts those who log in through their accounts.
